In a bold move, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, firmly addresses Lafarge Africa Plc and other stakeholders regarding the dire state of the Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos Expressway.
During a recent courtesy visit by Lafarge’s management team to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun voiced his concerns over the road’s deteriorating condition, which serves as a crucial artery for Lafarge and other industries in the region.
Governor Abiodun revealed that despite securing Federal Government permission for road reconstruction, the estimated cost has surged from the initial N70 billion to approximately N150 billion. This increase is attributed to rising costs of asphalt, diesel, and cement amidst challenging economic conditions.
Expressing his dissatisfaction, Governor Abiodun specifically called out Lafarge Africa Plc for its perceived neglect of the road’s state. He highlighted the significant contribution of Lafarge’s trucks to the road’s degradation and urged the company to actively participate in covering the reconstruction costs.
“The worst section of that road is right in front of your factory, and I wonder how a world-class company is so unmindful about the state of the road, particularly when your trucks are part of those that contributed to the level of depreciation,” the governor emphasized.
Governor Abiodun further urged Lafarge to adhere to global best practices in industrial waste disposal, stressing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the local population. Expressing concern over Lafarge’s non-compliance with waste disposal regulations at its Ewekoro plant, the governor highlighted the negative impacts on the lives and livelihoods of local communities.
In response, Lafarge’s Group Managing Director, Mr. Lolu Alade Akinyemi, showcased the company’s 64-year presence in the Ewekoro axis, underscoring its substantial contributions to the local economy. He detailed Lafarge’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, encompassing support for education, infrastructure, health, and overall community well-being.
As Governor Abiodun’s dialogue with Lafarge unfolds, the focus remains on finding comprehensive solutions to the pressing issues of road conditions and environmental impact. This engagement is poised to shape the trajectory of future collaborations, ensuring a balance between business interests and the welfare of the people.
